My Left Foot and Svaroopa® Yoga

I have had a bit of trouble with the circulation in my left leg for a while now. I have a Varicose vein and the circulation is quite poor. I especially have problems when I stand for long periods as my foot swells up so much that my toes don't touch the ground. It can take days for it to go down.

I thought I would buy a set of Skins socks to keep the swelling down while I was on Surf Life saving duty. I decided to ask my friend Angela for some advice before I bought them as she is a Nurse and knows about such things. She said to go ahead and try them but she would like to show me four simple poses that might also help. She is also a Svaroopa Yoga teacher so she knows what she is talking about so I jumped at the chance.

Getting on with it!

Main Beach

I’m certain the earthquake that devastated Japan yesterday is on everyone's mind. It’s hard to get excited about going to Beach Patrol at Southport SLSC when so many people are suffering in so many places. Going to patrol is usually one of my favourite things. I enjoy my bit of community service immensely. It makes me feel good.

But we can’t sit around getting morbid about things we can’t control. I will do a little mental trick a friend taught me when things like this start to dominate my thoughts. I imagine pushing the thoughts away and say to myself “That’s not my stuff”. It’s amazing how powerful it is. I invite you to try it. The next time
Beach Patrol
something you can’t control overwhelms you, stick out an imaginary hand to push it away and say to yourself, “That’s not my stuff”. Get rid of the stuff you

can’t control and work on the stuff you can.

I know it’s hardly rocket science. But it took me a long time to learn it.

How Surf Life Saving helps me stay healthy

My first contact with Surf Life Saving was the same as many people's. I had a child who attended most Sunday mornings. I grew up in the outback mining town of Mount Isa. Needless to say not much surf to save lives from. We have been members of Southport Surf Life Saving Club for over 10 years now. I must say that for most those years I have been happy to stand in the background and do the occasional odd job. Gillian however has always been involved, looking after State squads, organising uniforms and even for the last couple of years being an Age Manager.

About 4 years ago I decided to do my bronze medallion, this was by no means an easy goal for me. In fact it took me 8 months to get my weight down and my fitness high enough to give the Bronze Medallion course a go. My other Goal for the year was to complete the "Bridge To Brisbane" 10k run. So on the Saturday I did my 400 Metre swim in 7.20 minutes and on the Sunday I did the Run in 1 hour 18 minutes. All with a bad cold.

Reverse Graffiti (via Inspirational Geek)

I thought this was fascinating. I hope you enjoy.

Shane
Reverse Graffiti For as long as there have been dirty vehicles, people have writing "clean me" on them, but visual artist Alexandre Orion has taken this concept to a new level with his much more creative (and time consuming!) take on 'reverse graffiti'. It's like traditional graffiti, but with an eco twist. Detergents, wire brushes and good ol' fashion elbow grease replace the spray cans and stencils that we're used to seeing from graffiti artists, cleaning away … Read More

Seth's Blog: Seven questions for leaders

Seven questions for leaders

Do you let the facts get in the way of a good story?

What do you do with people who disagree with you... do you call them names in order to shut them down?

Are you open to multiple points of view or you demand compliance and uniformity? [Bonus: Are you willing to walk away from a project or customer or employee who has values that don't match yours?]

Is it okay if someone else gets the credit?

How often are you able to change your position?

Do you have a goal that can be reached in multiple ways?

If someone else can get us there faster, are you willing to let them?

No textbook answers... It's easy to get tripped up by these. In fact, most leaders I know do.
